STAMFORD -- The U.S. Department of the Treasury has awarded a $950,000 Community Development Financial Institution grant to the Stamford-based Housing Development Fund Inc. for affordable housing projects, according to U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Bridgeport.

HDF will use the $950,000 financial assistance award as loan capital to establish a program to help low-income, predominantly minority residents and families purchase and rehabilitate homes in specific areas of Fairfield County.

"We are thrilled about all the possibilities of helping more low- and moderate-income households reach home ownership, improve their housing and expand affordable rental stock," Joan Carty, executive director of the fund, said in a statement. "The...grant will allow us to assist many more low-and moderate-income residents, and is a phenomenal investment in and belief in our future. This generous grant gives us powerful energy to continue and expand out goals."

HDF was established in 1989 to promote the development, rehabilitation and preservation of affordable housing in Fairfield County.

"HDF helps families in Fairfield County achieve the American Dream of home ownership." Shays said.

"I am grateful for their good work and the support of the Treasury Department to help make this area more affordable for families who need help," he said.

Fairfield County consistently ranks among the top three most expensive areas in the country to buy or rent housing.
