By supporting charitable programs and activities in the community, an organization can help to enhance the quality of life for its citizens. Since its inception in 2007, the People’s United Community Foundation has been supporting the local community by awarding nearly $3 million to organizations in Connecticut and New York. More than $2.2 million was allocated in 2008, and $284,000 was granted during the first quarter of 2009. Beginning in 2009, the People’s United Community Foundation will fund organizations located in all six states in which the company operates.

The People’s United Community Foundation focuses its efforts on supporting three key areas: community development, youth development, and affordable housing.

“The goal of foundation support is to help improve the lives of people residing or working in the communities served by People’s United Bank,” said Timothy B. Hodges, president of the People’s United Community Foundation.

“From the Building with Books Program in Bridgeport that supports after-school learning for high school students, to the Hole in the Wall Gang in New Haven that supports seriously ill children in all Connecticut Hospitals, to the Connecticut Housing Investment Fund in Hartford that supports rebuilding urban neighborhoods, funding from the People’s United Community Foundation has touched the lives of many Connecticut residents. We are pleased to be able to help support the nonprofit community, especially in light of the current economy.”
